Rainbow Bridge and a Pot of Gold
The MLA for Cumberland South wonders how the province can install a replacement for the Rainbow Bridge near Amherst by Thursday.
Tory Rushton says construction just started and yet the Minister of Transportation says it will be in place by the end of October.
Rushton says, “I’ll be happy to see it in place,” but the MLA questions the likelihood.
Rushton put the question to the Minister, Lloyd Hines, in the Legislature. Hines says, “I can say clearly, with regard to the Rainbow Bridge, that the end is in sight.”
The bridge is being assembled off-site and will be moved into place. A doubting Rushton said, “I am waiting to see the pot of gold on October 31st. The contract stated that the bridge would need to be completed by October 31st or be subject to a penalty.”
The MLA asked the Minister, “Will the minister assure the people of Cumberland County that the bridge will be operational on November 1st, or will he be ready to enforce the penalty clause on this contract?”
Hines replied, “We are very serious about enforcing the contract.”
The bridge replacement project includes a glued laminate-timber construction, which is new to the province. Hines says the timbers for the approach spans, called ‘jump spans’ have arrived and other preparation work is complete.
The debate continues and the proof or fall is just three days away.
