Rushton Pleased for New School in Springhill
The province has finally committed to a new school in Springhill.
Cumberland South MLA Tory Rushton said the community is excited that work is finally underway and that students in Springhill will be in a new school by 2021.
The province announced last April, in the midst of a by-election campaign, that Springhill would be among 13 other communities to get a new school or major renovation. Recently, the province issued a statement that construction would be complete for the September 2021 school year.
Rushton says, “Our students deserve the best possible education in the best possible facility. I look forward to working with the government and the community as this process unfolds to ensure we have our students in new classrooms by September 2021.”
Cumberland South representatives and the community have been calling for a new school for years. In 2016, the Liberal government ignored objective rankings and funded schools in the home constituencies of the premier and his deputy.
Rushton says this good news can be attributed to an inspiring community effort. “I’m proud of the community for coming together, voicing their concerns and fighting for this success,” says Rushton. “We knew that a major oversight occurred when our community was overlooked. I am glad the government has seen the light and are making amends.”
