Sewage Dumping, A Pugwash Tourist Attraction
To paraphrase the welcoming message to visitors at New York’s Statue of Liberty, bring us your tired, huddled masses, and your sewage, as Cumberland County Council is considering a request from the Pugwash Village Commission to establish an RV dumping station in the village.
In a letter to council, the village noted the tourism and visitor benefits to Pugwash and area. A user-pay dumping facility attached to the village’s “highly functioning sewer system” would provide a much needed service—often requested from motorhome travellers who stop at the community’s Visitor Information Centre each summer.
The closest dumping station is at a private campground on the Gulf Shore Road, but it is limited to customers booked for at least one night’s stay at the campground. Other stations are located in Amherst and Truro, but the village hopes to encourage travellers to stray from the Trans Canada Highway to boost traffic along the more scenic route through yje northern part of the county.
At today’s meeting, County Council directed staff to research the logistics and costs of installing a user-pay dumping station in Pugwash. The report is expected before the end of December.
