Shinimicas Fire Department Rises from the Ashes
Shinimicas Fire Department’s rebuilding effort is gathering steam following a fire that destroyed the community firehall and its key equipment.
Insurance adjusters confirmed the building and much of its contents are fully ensured. Coverage will provide for a replacement at the same size. It may be configured differently, but insurance will only cover the same square footage of the former building.
Two of the trucks in the Shinimicas fleet were owned by the municipality.
The burned out building will be demolished and the debris removed within two weeks.
The department has sourced a lot of gear, much loaned or donated from other departments around the county and the province.
A truck loaned from Bridgewater is expected to arrive by the weekend, and Southampton Fire Department offered its second tanker as a loaner.
The scattered gear allows the department to continue providing firefighting services to the community, with a little extra help from nearby firefighting neighbours.
Twelve fire departments fought the stubborn blaze which started from a faulty module in one of the fire trucks. While the building was destroyed, the firefighting effort was credited with saving enough evidence to allow proper identification of the cause and quicker assessment of damages by insurance adjusters.
