Ski Operator Wants Tourism Development in Wentworth
Gregor Wilson, director of Ski Wentworth, visited Cumberland County Council tonight and outlined community plans for developing the Wentworth Valley’s four-seasons tourism potential.
A key component would be a 20-50 unit hotel at the base of the ski mountain.
The plan includes the creation and expansion of a variety of nature-based activities, and a significant increase in protected wilderness land.
But Wilson says the four-seasons plan is threatened by proposed industrial activities like clear-cutting, metal mining, and wind farm development.
He asked the county for a socio-economic impact study on how these industrial developments would affect Wentworth’s four-seasons plan. He also wants council to designate Higgins Mountain as a wilderness area, and a place a moratorium on industrial activity until the socio-economic study is complete.
Wilson envisions the Wentworth Valley area as a mini Banff or mini Whistler with hiking, biking, back-country skiing, eco-tourism adventures, mountain bike racing, paddling, fishing and more.
He said 20 new houses are going up in Wentworth now, and 50 to 80 thousand skiers visit annually.
Wilson suggests, “Four-seasons tourism could be one of the best booms to Cumberland County you’ve seen in a long time.”
