Ski Operator Wants Tourism Development in Wentworth

Gregor Wilson, director of Ski Wentworth, visited Cumberland County Council tonight and outlined community plans for developing the Wentworth Valley’s four-seasons tourism potential.

A key component would be a 20-50 unit hotel at the base of the ski mountain.

The plan includes the creation and expansion of a variety of nature-based activities, and a significant increase in protected wilderness land.

But Wilson says the four-seasons plan is threatened by proposed industrial activities like clear-cutting, metal mining, and wind farm development.

He asked the county for a socio-economic impact study on how these industrial developments would affect Wentworth’s four-seasons plan. He also wants council to designate Higgins Mountain as a wilderness area, and a place a moratorium on industrial activity until the socio-economic study is complete.

Wilson envisions the Wentworth Valley area as a mini Banff or mini Whistler with hiking, biking, back-country skiing, eco-tourism adventures, mountain bike racing, paddling, fishing and more.

He said 20 new houses are going up in Wentworth now, and 50 to 80 thousand skiers visit annually.

Wilson suggests, “Four-seasons tourism could be one of the best booms to Cumberland County you’ve seen in a long time.”

Hello. This is such a great idea for the valley. As a tax payer and living in Wentworth I think ATVing and snowmobiling should be considered. A lot of Wentworth tax payer are also into these sports. Pretty sure Banff and Whistler have these activities. Maybe all tax payers should have a say in the matters of our beautiful valley. What about all working together to maintain the beauty of the area.

I encourage the development in Wentworth Valley as long as existing snowmobile and ATV trails are included in the plan.

My concern is a few wish to remove motorized vehicles from the valley, which I hope is not the case.

I purchased property there to enjoy not only skiing and hiking but also snowmobiling and ATVing

This hotel proposal sounds wonderful, we have heard many people say they would love to see mountain bike activities on the hill. We also have property in the Wentworth valley and we bought it so we could take part in all activities that this beautiful area offers! We love to snowshoe, ski, hike, atv and many of our close friends have invested and enjoy snowmobiling. We see absolutely no reason while everyone should not be able to enjoy all these activities. If you limit the activities you limit the communities ability to grow and prosper. NB has built a fantastic winter community that includes all of these activities where all people can do all things in harmony ..... just some thoughts on the subject.

Wow what a great idea. I absolutely love this area and have been travelling these parts with my family for the last 15 years. We have a cottage close by and have enjoyed many family outings over the years together. Hiking, fishing, ATV-ing and our favourite passion - snowmobiling. Good luck with your plans and I encourage you to work together with all users so that these areas can be shared with families for years to come.

Four seasons Tourism is a great idea and would being a lot of money to the area.Plus keeping Wentworth's natural beauty. But why stop logging, mining or wind farming in surround areas.I understand the Halifax people that own all the new and old housing in the area want to keep it rustic.Thats why they stopped the twin highway going through Wentworth back in the 1990's.Which all the businesses in the area at the time, except the Ski-run. Anything the Wilson's do is not for Wentworth, but just for Halifax people with cottages in the area.Sure there will be jobs for the residents in the area. The Wilsons are mad because you can see cleaning from the ski-run,so keep the cleaning, mining and windmills from their sight.

Fantastic Ski Wentworth wants to expand, certainly far overdue however one business shouldn't profit from expansion while another gets chastised. Do people what others to have control over what they do with their property, it was said 20 homes are being built, again fantastic~bringing more, most likely seasonal people to the area but they too have to pay taxes and there may be some local contractors working which is good but it seems people are forgetting this is about control not 100% about the greater good. Be smart about the choices, grass isn't always greener!

Sounds good in theory but for those who want to see snowmobiling and atving continue there may be some bad news because I don't think that is part of the plan.

I think the plan includes getting rid of those uses....

At Whistler when reading the article and the comments.

This was our 8th consecutive year at ICSC conference there.

Not all the 1400 delegates ski or ride . Many opt for snowmobile rides - some at night to dine at restaurants up on the. Mountain , take tours of the backcountry in snowcats and ATV s equipped with tracks and dog sleds.

The locals will attest how important these vehicles are to wildneress rescue of lost and injured backcountry skies and hikers. It is hard to believe Whistler is only 50 tears old.

My first visit there was 1976. First to Wentworth 1969.

It takes vision to develope a destination resort that appeals to a wide visitor base.

An idea that serves a select and narrow interest group is not a vision just a thought and not a sound one.
