Special Grant Rewards Volunteer Services

The Nova Scotia government is once again investing in the province’s volunteer services — fire departments and ground search and rescue organizations.

Each department will receive a no-strings attached grant of $10,000 to help assist with rising operational costs.

It is the second such support grant given in the last two years.

The Province is investing almost $3.5 million to provide one-time grants to more than 340 organizations.

Grant recipients can determine how they will use the funds to best meet the needs of the organization, its volunteers, or the wider community. 

This could include upgrades to equipment or facilities, support for training, fire prevention education, or honoraria to assist firefighters with increased costs.

The groups will not have to apply. Cheques will simply be sent directly to the organizations before the end of March.

The President of the Fire Service Association of Nova Scotia says, “Throughout the pandemic, the impacts on the volunteer fire departments to raise funds to purchase new equipment and maintain funds to support operational costs, was greatly hampered.” Greg Jones, of Amherst, added, “The financial support announced today is greatly appreciated and will assist the volunteer fire departments across our province by easing the burden of fundraising shortfalls and providing the ability to purchase much needed equipment without delay.”
