Standing By for Storm Warning
There are seriously mixed signals coming from weather folk regarding this weekend's forecast. All agree it will be wet, but some models suggest a major winter storm is possible for Saturday night and Sunday.
If true, this would be the first real test of our capacity to handle communications for all the closures and cancellation that might follow.
As you see on the top centre of our front page, we will post closures and cancellations. More than that, we will stand by to post them as received, and also announce them immediately on Six Rivers Radio.
Getting out the word about cancellations has always been difficult. Some use a phone tree, while others rely on FaceBook or a dedicated website. People in the Amherst area have a good community radio station, but much of the northern part of Cumberland cannot receive the station's signal.
That is a large part of why we launched Six Rivers News and Radio, to fill the void left by the closure of the Oxford Journal, and the distant radio station.
There are certain drawbacks to internet based news and radio, but the benefits far outweigh the shortcomings. For one, you can see and hear us from just about anywhere in the world. Second, there is no waiting for a printing press or delivery, the news is posted as it is received.
This weekend may fizzle as a storm event, but it is only a matter of time before we get a big dose of winter. When that happens, and you are forced to cancel an event or report a closure, phone 902-243-2381 or email news@sixrivers.ca. Your message will be posted right away and announced repeatedly on Six Rivers Radio (CLICK HERE).
