Thinkers to Gather for 60th Pugwash Conference
The 60th anniversary of the Pugwash Thinkers Conference will be celebrated with a two day, intensive retreat to discuss climate with a decidedly rural focus.
In 1957, Pugwash became the centre of international thought as 22 scientists gathered in the village to consider the immense threat of nuclear annihilation. Now, 60 years later, the conversation turns to climate change, described by a conference organizer as “the second threat to mankind.”
While the two day retreat is for “Thinkers only,” the public is invited to mingle and discuss the issue at a series of events both before and after the formal agenda.
The event runs from Thursday, September 28 to Sunday, October 1. Opening day events include: a climate and environmental art exhibit; a talk by Denver-based environmental artist Regan Rosberg and Project Drawdown Science Director, Chad Frishmann; a panel discussion on climate change; and the screening of the film Albatross, produced by Chris Jordan.
The conference will wrap-up Sunday from Noon to 2:00 pm, with a public presentation of conference announcements, a media release, and other invited speakers.
The conference organizer, Robert Cervelli, Executive Director of the Centre for Local Prosperity, says, “A key focus of this event will be Project Drawdown (www.drawdown.org), which will provide a truly international lens for climate change and the immediate paths forward at the local level.”
Cervelli says, “An outcome of this retreat will be a roadmap, co-authored by the retreat Thinkers, which will be made available to municipalities within the region, across Canada and the world.” He also noted a video is in the planning.
Delegates to the conference, referred to as ‘The Thinkers’, include: John Eaton, Thinkers Lodge Commissioner; Chad Frischmann, Project Drawdown Science Director; Michael Shuman, local economies expert and author; and others.
