Tie Breaker Dashes Pugwash Curling Hopes
Pugwash hopes of advancing to the playoff round in the Provincial Girls Curling Championship were dashed today in a crucial tie breaking draw to the button.
Pugwash High School went 2 and 1 in the round robin and they placed their hope in North Kings, the team that handed them their only loss. Had North Kings beaten Dartmouth in the last game of the round robin, the locals would have advanced.
However, the underdog rink from Dartmouth dashed that hope with a victory, tying Pugwash at two wins, one loss.
The two skips went out to the ice to decide the tie by throwing one stone each, the closest to the button for the win. The Dartmouth skipped narrowly edged out the draw from Lily Sanderson (in the photo). Dartmouth advanced and PDHS came home.
There was a fair bit of grumbling at the event, with experienced curlers wondering how the draw schedule was drafted. In the end, Pugwash was eliminated with a 2 and 1 record, while the two teams from the other pool advanced to the playoffs with losing 1 and 2 records. Add to that, C.P. Allen of Bedford withdrew from the competition, forfeiting their final two games. It was not curling’s finest hour.
