UPDATE: Oxford School Classes Moving to Pugwash
Primary Classes will operate between 8am and 1:45pm
A fleet of moving vans were called into action between Oxford and Pugwash yesterday. It wasn’t a mass exodus from the town, but rather the transfer of chairs, desks, shelves, books and other supplies to operate Oxford’s school classes in Pugwash.
At least seven moving trucks were gathered in the high school parking lot early last evening.
A rushed but complicated system will see the two schools share Pugwash elementary and high school in a split-shift system.
The move is prompted by concerns about the safety of the Oxford Regional Education Centre. The eight year-old school, built at a cost of 18 million dollars has structural issues and officials have determined it is unsafe for students.
Pugwash High students will go to school in the morning while Oxford High classes will occupy the building in the afternoon. All elementary classes will operate between 8am and 1:45pm
Grades four, five, and six from Cyrus Eaton Elementary have already had their classrooms moved into the high school. They will be joined by their counterparts from Oxford.
Meanwhile, the primary to grade three classes from both schools will share the Cyrus Eaton facility. Pugwash will provide the pre-primary service for both groups.
Music rooms and lounges are now classrooms, while some large classrooms are being partitioned to provide room for two classes.
Work is underway to determine a fix for the Oxford Education Centre, but no date has been set for students to return to the facility.
