Upgrade Announced for Amherst Hospital Emergency

The Minister of Health today announced a major development for the emergency department of the Cumberland Regional Health Care Centre in Amherst.

Leo Glavine says, “I’m pleased work is moving forward to explore modernizing the emergency department and a new dialysis unit.”

The province will invest $2.7 million over the next two years to complete feasibility assessments, site investigations, schematic design, and design development work for the redevelopment of the emergency department and the addition of a 12-station dialysis unit.

The plan will lay the groundwork for improvements to help address the volume of patients in the emergency department, add extra privacy, and accommodate more complex cases.

The medical site lead at the hospital says, “Our staff and physicians are challenged to provide optimal care to our patients in the current physical space.” Dr. Janneke Gradstein added, “The redevelopment of our hospital’s emergency department, and expansion of dialysis services to reflect the care needs of this region, represent a needed and very appropriate investment in health care for this area.”

Quick Facts:

  • a design consultant is expected by spring 2021
  • the emergency department sees more than 20,000 patients each year
  • residents currently receive dialysis services in Springhill, Truro, Moncton, and Halifax

Nova Scotia has embarked on the most significant infrastructure investment in Nova Scotia history to modernize health-care facilities in Cape Breton, Halifax, Bridgewater, Pugwash, and across the province. Officials believe that improved infrastructure helps recruit and retain health-care professionals.
